25 years experience of the Laboratory Information Management (LIMS) market as an end user, programmer, system manager, project manager and technical support specialist. 10 years in the water and pharmaceutical industries as an analytical chemist, specialising in Chromatography and Atomic Absorption, both routine and method development. PC literate.
Autoscribe market and support a flexible LIMS which uses an ODBC connection to the customer’s preferred database. The most common databases used are Microsoft’s Access and SQL Server. I worked in the support department taking customer support calls and emails. I and up to four colleagues installed new systems all over Europe, mainly in the UK. This work involved using proprietary configuration tools to create around 100 screens which work together to form the LIMS. The report writer used with the Matrix system is Business Objects’ ‘Crystal’. I have considerable experience with this product which can be used to report from a large range of data sources.
Other aspects of the job: Software testing, test script creation, manual writing, creating visit reports.
Beckman market several software products which allow companies to run more efficient, automated laboratories. The two major products are ‘LabManager’, a laboratory database (LIMS) and ‘PeakPro’, a chromatography data acquisition/analysis package. Main aspects of the job—
Configuration and installation of VMS and HP-UX-based LabManager and PeakPro systems throughout the world; training end users in the above products at all levels; providing technical support for all of the Beckman L.A.O. products on H.P. and VMS platforms.
The quality control laboratories at SK&F Laboratories Ltd used an HP1000 computer running the Beckman "PeakPro" and "LabManager" software packages. I was appointed System Manager of this system. Four independent laboratories used the system which served around 120 users in all areas of the company. Key aspects of the job are listed below—
Creating LIMS reports; validation of laboratory computer systems; effective project management skills; training / communication / documentation; FORTRAN programming; statistical methods of process control.
In the Analytical Development department of Smith Kline and French I was analysing products soon to be released to the market place. I devised new stability indicating methods, validated them and then used them to measure the product stability. These methods were usually developed on HPLC. A part of this job which I found most stimulating was programming a Hewlett Packard HP1000 computer running a chromatography data collection and reduction system.
Davyhulme Effluent Treatment Unit was one of the largest in the country. The substantial proportion of industrial effluent made the analytical work more interesting than might otherwise have been the case. I had a varied and interesting job whose functions included—
The trace analysis of sea water using an Auto-Analyser; research into analytical problems; non routine analysis of trade effluents and water samples mainly using Gas Liquid Chromatography and Atomic Absorption.
Educated in the north-east at Consett Grammar Technical School. I obtained 'O' levels in English Literature, Physics, Geography, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and English Language. At school I gained one 'A' level, in Chemistry. Three more 'A' level equivalents were added to the above, during my studies at Sheffield Polytechnic: Mathematics, Physics and Metallurgy. In 1972 I gained the following qualifications at Sheffield—
HND in Chemistry, Supplementary Analytical Chemistry (LRSC) and GRSC part 1.
Crystal Report Writing: Advanced 2 day course, September 1998
Crystal Report Writing: Introductory 2 day course, August 1998
